about

I am approaching 50 years old and started listening to electronic music when I was about 12 - I think! Art of Noise and Eurythmics were early influences - Kraftwerk too, a little later. I was big into techno, used to shop at Fat Cat and go to Lost parties. I was and am still a huge fan of the first and second generation Detroit and Chicago artists. I’ve been making music since about the age of 14, starting on four track tape. I’ve never had what I would call a proper studio - I certainly never had proper monitors and have generally mixed down on headphones. Up till the end of 2016 I had my decks and records out, but then came my first-born son so it all went into storage. The last few years, I’ve been using a Mac book pro and a two octave keyboard - and headphones - to make music. I use Ableton and a few soft synths - Carbon Electra I like and Cherry Audio’s Juno emulator for example. I’ve started building beats using Loopcloud for single shots, which has really speeded things up. Hits are punchy, basically in tune from the start and I find I have to do way less eq’ing. I use a lot of Devious machines plugins, like Infiltrator and Duck. I love the F9 basses and synths, they really cut through the mix. This latest release has a focus on trying to use or create sounds that sound more hardware-based - sticking arps through filters in Infiltrator for example to create acid bass-lines. I think it’s getting somewhere, but there’s always a way to go. I am not looking for success, or financial reward - maybe some feedback sometimes - but I really make music because the process is good for me. Now that I have kids and no time, it’s more of a struggle - but I find that actually pushes the output and makes me focus. Brutal in my choices. I make a tune a week on average. I am also way less fussy than I used to be. Quite happy to record a vocal on my phone and use it. Not to (over) think about the science too much, just the sound.
